Blueberry tea. Warm soup. A crooked tooth in the rain. You smile lo siento, only to take it back. Turn the key. A game of peek-a-boo, a long-lost stranger. Tell your mother you are fine, but lock the gate. You are not anxious, only afraid of the gerund. Fill in the blank and up your lungs. But do not mourn the woman you did not become. Or the retreating sea. You play mother for a month. How tiring to love. To stretch one’s heart. To dream of almendras, avenas, cerdo. To laugh and call it learning. To meet with goodbye. Half hour conversations strung into prayer. The world is quiet when we eat. But only then.
